Corridors may be empty
and classrooms silent across schools in a couple of Australia’s southern states. However, within the halls at the Highfields
State School in Toowoomba on Saturday October 9th, the blur of
activity was refreshingly evident when like-minded music lovers from Choirs
near and far gathered for a Spring sing.
It was that ‘C’ word
that induced a three-year hiatus for this signature ‘Choirbolical’ event, bringing individuals and groups of singers to
Toowoomba to expand their repertoire in an atmosphere of fun and friendship. Thanks to the lifting of restrictions, ‘Choirbolical’s’
workshop, ‘Spring Sing 2021’, was once
more able to welcome a whole host of singers and with the enlightening
instruction by Mr Graeme Moreton, AM, founding director of the Brisbane Chamber
Choir, alongside Choirbolicals’s musical director Morgan Chalmers, it was a gratifying
return to a day of some beautiful choral singing.
Notwithstanding words
like ‘challenging’, ‘intricate’, ‘demanding’ used to describe some of the
musical works presented at the outset, by the day’s end, and fortified by a
delicious serving of lunch and hot beverages, choirs were girded and eager to
present the fruits of their day’s labours but not before a short performance by
each of the choirs present. The Esk Community Choir, with the confidence
of a well-practised choral group, and despite reduced numbers, dug deep to give
a performance way beyond expectations.
