‘SUNDAY SERENADES’ SOARED WITH SINGING FROM ‘SOUL SONG’ AND ESK COMMUNITY CHOIRS

There are times when musical events pop up serendipitously on the Esk Community Choir calendar; events not of their own making where the choir becomes guest rather than host. On Sunday, May 7th Brisbane’s ‘Soul Song Choir’ was at the tail end of an enjoyable 3-day choir workshop at Camp Somerset, eager to complete their weekend with a performance to express the fruits of their musical labours.

With the Somerset Civic Centre as the venue of choice, ‘Soul Singers’ Choir Director, Jacqueline Larsen kindly issued an invitation to Alexis and the Esk Community Choir to be part of this performance.  For a choir group from Brisbane whose mantra includes a place where you can both find and lose yourself in music, this was an invitation too tempting to dismiss.

‘Sunday Serenades’ became the collaboration of three choirs, Esk Choir members setting the concert in motion with Carolyn’s wonderful solo, followed by the sweet sounds from ‘The Sweethearts’, always terrific ‘Tutti Flutti’ by Alexis, Suzanne and Ruth, our beaut little Uke Group, culminating in a consummate choral performance by the choir.

Taking to the stage, ‘Sound Avenue’ the boutique vocal ensemble under the energetic Direction of Jacqueline, gave a superb performance of their predominantly a cappella jazz and pop numbers, followed by the 60 strong voices of ‘Soul Song Choir’ with a passionate performance of their signature pop, soul, and gospel songs.

Shepherded by Sue Cox, our dynamic Choir catering team delivered a delightful afternoon tea to the visitors and many grateful concert goers before closing the doors on a fabulous afternoon of musical entertainment.

It was a privilege for Esk’s own choir to have been able to contribute to the richness of the talent which filled the Somerset Civic Centre on this 7th day in May.
