Judith Zammit was a woman of substance. Together with her husband, Russell, they brought up four beautiful daughters and back in the day, although Judith probably knew nothing about power walking or aerobics, she would no doubt have kneaded bread, ironed the handkerchiefs, lugged her groceries home in carry bags, planted out her garden to ensure ‘a nice show’, cooked Sunday roasts, and whipped up batches of cakes and biscuits since, against all medical advice, she did have a penchant for pastries.
Judith was also passionate about music and with a true soprano
voice became a valued member of the Esk Community Choir, her dedication to the
choir lasting many years and continued long after ill health denied her the
ability to make the trip down the highway from Lowood on Tuesday nights. More
often than not, both Judith and Russell were a sparkling presence in the
audiences at so many of the Choir’s performances.
In recent months, Judith’s health deteriorated and on 8th
August, 2023, she passed away peacefully, her stoical, softly spoken husband
Russell by her side as he was always. A
requiem Mass for her funeral was held at Lowood’s St Brendan’s Catholic Church
attended by a capacity congregation of family members and friends, many of whom
having travelled from interstate and overseas to attend; a measure of the depth
of love felt for both Judith and Russell.
With reference to the day’s First Reading, ‘There is a
time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens:’ and
on this day following a request for singers to lead in song, to Alexis’s
faultless accompaniment, supplemented at times by the dulcet sounds of Suzanne
and Ruth on flute, a choir gave their time and the gift of their song throughout
the mass. ‘I know there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to
do good while they live.’ Ecclesiastes 3:12
